For years, the Foxboro Boy Scouts ensure that the American Flags are set up around the Common and Central Street.
The flags go out for 9 different holidays:
- Armed Forces Day (the 3rd Saturday of May)
- Memorial Day (4th Monday of May)
- Flag Day (June 14th)
- Independence Day (July 4th)
- Purple Heart Day (August 7th)
- Patriot Day (September 11th)
- POW*MIA Day (3rd Friday of September)
- Veterans Day (November 11th)
- Pearl Harbor Day (December 7th)
In 2019, Matthew Gonsalves, an Eagle Scout and assistant Scout Master for Troop 32, took on an Eagle Scout project to redesign the flag layout and to find sponsors for all the 100 new flags and poles. He moved to upstate New York at the end of the summer 2019 to attend Paul Smith’s College and before doing so asked for help to ensure the flags keep getting set up and taken down after he left.
The Foxboro Jaycees volunteered to assist the Scouts with this important effort. While not a Jaycee project, this is another example of Jaycees working with other groups in and around town, pitching in where needed. This is what Foxboro is about — community!
Thank you Matthew for all you work and dedication; the Jaycees will assist the scouts to keep this magnificent tradition honoring our country and our heroes alive.
The Jaycees began helping this effort as of July 3, 2019. We are honored to do so.
