August 2008
From the President - Mike Savage

Well, it’s mid-summer and there’s a lot of ID projects running now. So many of you might not be looking ahead to the fall yet, but just to update everyone…

THERE WILL BE A HAUNTED HOUSE!

Up until about a week ago, it looked like we were going to fall back on the Mini-Haunt this year. But then, Fred decided we really needed to have the 20th annual Haunted House. So Fred has volunteered to chair the house again this year. Hopefully we will be having a meeting regarding the details soon. We are really looking for a lot of manpower this year to take the burden off everyone. Just in case this is the last Haunted House, it would be nice to make it one of the best ones.

We do need a couple of chairpeople for some of the less glamorous, yet very important projects, such as “inventory coordinator”, and “cards/letters of thanks”.

Also coming up is hopefully the “Jaycee Open” if someone chooses to run it.
Other than that, I hope everyone is having a nice summer, and I hope to see you at the next meeting.

Mike
Ways & Means - Fred Badger (VP)

As of this writing there are 2 Concerts on the Common remaining, weather permitting. We suffered our first rain out July 24 but you still have time to come down and help with running the concession booth before the concert season ends. August 7 is with the Cocobanana Band and the last concert is on August 14 with the Galley Dawgs. There will not be a concession booth on August 7. That night will be a fund raiser for a local family. They will be running their own concession booth that evening.

After much thought and not wanting to miss out on a 20th version of the Haunted House, I've decided to chair this year's Haunted House at the Orpheum Theater. I will be announcing a meeting to be held within the next 2 weeks and will be looking for a strong committee to make this one of the best haunted house we've done. I've already had discussions with Bill Cunningham from the Orpheum Theater and will be working closely with him as we go forward. I look forward to bringing out some of the more experienced members. I'm going to need your help as well in making this year's version a big success.

Planning continues on the Craft & Vendor Fair. Helene has made tentative arrangements for a local venue but continues to explore other options. More information will be available at the August GM.

We've decided the hand out some of our remaining glow items at Foxboro's Family Night Out. This will be held on August 5 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. It's a wonderful night for families. If you have the time, don't miss it.

Hello Foxboro Jaycees!

I hope everyone is having a blast this summer! To keep up with all the great summer Jaycees events, be sure to check with Bob Gillis' masterpiece website at http://www.foxborojaycees.org regularly so that you don't miss out on a project.

The big "Membership thank you of the month" goes to Jen Widmer and her booth team for jumping in last-minute and running a successful Mansfield Family Fun Night Membership Booth for the very first time to help broaden our audience and membership base. Hopefully that is going to be a venue that we can attend for many years to come.

Also, I want to thank all chapter members who have already signed up to pitch in at the Concerts On the Common Membership Booth to help us stay front-and-center at those events. We have busily been handing out magnets, business cards & brochures to recruit potential new members and advertise for our many projects (it's never too early to start getting people excited about the Haunted House!). However, I am still looking for Jaycees to help out on Aug 14 ("Galley Dawgs") - please email or call me if you are available that evening.

Foxboro Jaycees sweatshirts (Activation Apparel) are available for Jaycees who chair a project during the 2008-2009 year. If you have chaired a project and would like to receive your sweatshirt, please contact me with your choice of size (M,L,XL,2XL,3XL). If you are in need of a t-shirt, feel free to let me know as well.

Finally, I would like to remind you that we now have 2 membership booths (a sturdy wooden one & a lightweight table-top one) to use for advertising - if you are planning a Jaycee event that does not specifically call for a related Membership Booth project, please be so kind to contact me and I will give you brochures and magnets and/or the booth you request so that we can make sure the community knows that your event is sponsored by the Foxboro Jaycees.

As always, please call (see Wise Fox roster) or email me (membership@foxborojaycees.org) with any questions, comments, concerns, project ideas, or to volunteer your services to the Membership Area.

See you at the GM!

Unless a miracle happens, it looks like the following will not run due to lack of chairmen: Canoe Trip, Whale Watching, and White-water Rafting!

Come out to the August G.M. for Tom Whiffen’s refreshments. Thank you very much Linda Magovern for providing us with a very appropriate indoor BBQ, complete with watermelon!

We will not be having a speaker in August, but we may in September.

If you have not gone to the booth playground to watch or play Pick-up Volleyball with Bob Webster and John Zarella and the gang, remember it is on Tuesdays at 6:00 P.M. The cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for non-members. Associates vs. Regulars Volleyball is rumored to be coming up sometime soon… so start getting in shape now, and stay tuned for further announcements as to the venue, etc.! If you would like more details, call Kris Long.

Our next ID events are this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is the Block Island Social, and Sunday is the Pawtucket Red Sox game. By the time you receive this, we will have already gone, however, there is still time to get in on Kris Long’s New England Revolution game on August 9th. Kick-off is at 7:30, lots open at 5:30, and gates at 6:30. Call Kris for tickets asap! At this time, there are not enough people signed up to go, so it may be cancelled! If you have any interest, call Kris today!!!! IT IS FREE! FREE! FREE!

The camping/hiking trip stories and pictures made me wish I had gone. They did more than just hike! Check out the pictures on the Jaycee website. There is even one of Monica on a horse!!
Talk to Laureen House if you are interested in joining the book club. The next book discussion will be August 20th at 8:00 P.M. at the Widmer’s estate. The book discussed will be Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time by Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin. See the website for information on September’s meeting.

Continue to keep track of your Jaycee participation (Degrees of Jaycees) by printing out a form from the Jaycee website. It is much easier if you do it as you go along. Contact Sandy Emery if you have any questions. I am still looking for a golfer, or non-golfer, to chair the Jaycee Open. This is not a difficult project to run… Please don’t let this one slide like some of the others… This is our time to have some fun before working the Haunted House!!
Secretary - Wendy Kerchoff

Is it just me or is this summer just flying right by? It's been a slow month for Sunshine. Which can be a good thing!

My favorite part about Sunshine is making people smile. And I think I did just that when a basket of flowers were sent to Dave and Monica Fisler for the birth of their beautiful baby girl!

If you know someone that needs a smile, please let me know!
Community Development - Tom Whiffen (VP)
We are currently involved in a number of ongoing projects through the Spring and Summer. Vanessa Linke is running the Book Drive. If you have books you would like to donate – please give Vanessa a call. Deena Cummings is running DVD’s for Veterans. If you have DVD’s you would like to donate - please give Deena a call. Publicity is going well with Wendy Kerchoff making sure the Foxboro Jaycees are well represented in the Foxboro Reporter. She will be looking into how we can get ourselves into the free sections of the other local town papers.

Concerts on the Common chaired by Kris Long and Wendy Kerchoff is every Thursday night. Many of our favorite bands will be returning along with a few new surprises!

Family Night Out manpower is now being run by Vanessa Linke. Thank you Vanessa! The Foxboro Police are currently running this project the first week in August and need some support. This project brings families out on the common to learn about how to protect their kids from daily dangers in society.

Let me know if you have any CD ideas!
