How to be a Jaycee Mentor
Thinking about volunteering to mentor a new chapter member? Or maybe you’ve already volunteered but aren’t sure how to help? Here’s a guide to get to know your mentee and support their start in the Foxboro Jaycees.
1. Establish Communication
- Exchange phone numbers, email addresses, and other contact information.
- Call or email to let them know about upcoming events.
2. Help Them Get Oriented
- Sit next to them at General Meetings (GMs) and mingle with them at projects.
- Introduce them to other Jaycees, especially those with shared interests.
- Ensure they have a copy of the New Member Guide (available on the website) and offer to review it with them.
3. Suggest Ways to Get Involved
- Projects that need manpower.
- Fun projects they can attend to get familiar with the chapter.
- Committees they could join.
- Projects needing chairpeople or co-chairs.
- Open Board Positions (suggest starting as a Director).
4. Support Their Leadership
- Suggest a few ‘easy’ projects they could chair or co-chair as a first-timer and offer to co-chair with them.
- Invite them to join a project you are running.
- If they are chairing a project, ask:
- Have they found the relevant CPG online?
- How are things going?
- What help do they need?
- Do they need internal chapter resources (e.g., previous chairmen)?
- Do they need external resources/contacts (e.g., media outlets)?
5. Keep in Touch
- If you don’t see them at a few consecutive projects or GMs, reach out to see if they are okay and let them know they were missed.
- Remind them about upcoming events and opportunities.
